From the Republics to the Republic
FROM THE REPUBLICS TO THE REPUBLIC
The Historical Regatta among the glorious Ancient Maritime Republics of the Italian Peninsula (Amalfi, Genoa, Pisa, Venice), now reached the 65th Edition and the 9th year of documentation, it will be held in Amalfi next June 2020. Established in Pisa in 1955 and annually takes place in turn in one of each of the four heirs of seafaring history; its a cultural, sporting and evocative event of absolute interest and beauty, that symbolically represents the greatness of our country in a rigorous and accurate historical context, which tells people, history and cultural's heritage of a glorious middle age.
From ever under the High Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic, it has become more than any other historical and cultural event, a strong symbol of Italy, even abroad where it has been repeatedly represented and run several times.
The project was born in Pisa (city crossroads of histories, peoples and cultures), where the sea is certainly the first element that has characterized its history and over the centuries has donated an inestimable artistic heritage. Built around the historical value of the Ancient Italian Maritime Republics and of their current and evocative Regatta-Challenge, it's focused on their history, their historical customs, their epic stories, the boats, the sporting challenge, the public, the navigation between tradition and competition.
The photographic documentation is developed on four themes that characterize the project: historical images, timeless images, narrative images and images of pure sports reportage. These four independent themes merged together in a single body of work represent the photographic mission.
The main objective of this project is that it can represent a vehicle of knowledge, image and promotion for the Italian history and arts, marked by the ancient historical-political-economic rivalry between the different City-States which today constitutes the wealth of our country and at the same time a cultural explosion in the Mediterranean Sea, via the cultural exchange with European and Mediterranean Cities which have played a decisive role in our cultural growth and which together for millennia have characterized the Mediterranean people's identity. Besides that, my foremost objective is to preserve a cultural and historical heritage of humanity; enhancing our national cultural traditions and cultural expressions worldwide.
The large perspective of this project is called "From the Republics to the Republic", a multi-disciplinary endeavour under the patronage of the Italian Federation of Fixed Seat Rowing (F.I.C.S.F.). For the future publishing phase, the project includes a traveling museum exhibition of high-resolution color print; a documentary; several video/installation work; a large hardcover book (bilingual edition) and an interactive website.
